Storthes Hall 1 – 2 Steeton

After an even start to the game, a lack of communication in the Storthes Hall midfield on 10 minutes resulted in Steetons Will Lee free to shoot from 20 yards only for it to narrowly go wide. Another attack from the away side resulted in Andy Holdens cross being met by Graham Holmes who lost his marker only for James Roberts to produce a fine point blank save to keep the score line at 0-0.

With Storthes Hall slowly getting in to the game, Murray Hill’s first time cross from the left fell to Mohammed Nawfall, who’s shot was saved well by Steetons Phil Rishton. A Steeton corner deservedly produced the first goal of the game for the away side, with poor marking resulting in Lee Reilly free to slot home from 5 yards. Shortly after the goal, Storthes were awarded a free kick in which Gav Armitage stepped up to take only to see his powerful effort just fly past the top right hand corner of the goal.

The first chance of the second half fell to Steeton on 65 minutes, a 20 yard strike which was goal bound until Rob Morris instinctively headed away from danger at the back. With Steeton pressing for the first goal of the game, debutant centre back Sam Royal headed clear a very dangerous cross from the right hand side only for the ball to fall to an unmarked Graham Holmes who struck wide from 15 yards.

Strong running down the left hand side from Gav Armitage on 65 minutes fell to Mohammed Nawfall who drilled his shot in to the bottom left hand corner to level the game at 1-1. Storthes Hall, re-energized from the goal, were now on top and on 75 minutes a Gav Armitage cross was met by Josh Rodgers who’s header went agonisingly wide of the goal. Almost immediately following this, Steeton attacked and a mis-judgement by the Storthes midfield resulted in Curtis Simpson to cross the ball to an unmarked Lee Reilly who’s header hit the underside of the crossbar and in to take a 2-1 lead. With just 10 minutes to go Storthes attacked to try and find the equalizer only for Steeton to hold on for 3 points.

The Hall made a fine start to the new season, taking the lead early on as Gav Armitage made space down the left and his fine low cross was turned in by debutant Tom McCreadie. Thge lead was increased after 20 minutes as McCreadie returned the compliment, releasing Armitage to advance into the box and score off the post. Danny Senior then shot wide when well positioned and at the other end right back Conor Sykes met a corner but from 8 yards out he headed over the bar. On 33 minutes Simon Ollerenshaw lost possession in midfield and a quick though ball caught the Golcar defence square, allowing Armitage to advance and square the ball for McCreadie to fire into the net.
The visitors came more into the game in the 2nd half with the home team seemingly content to sit on the lead, with centre backs Olly Taylor and Lee Mozley in commanding form. Tempers became a little frayed and Hall left back James Buckley received his marching orders for a 2nd yellow card. This lead to a real rearguard action from the home defence who came under severe pressure. However with 10 minutes left a long ball found Armitage sprinting away and when he was hauled down from behind, the referee had no hesitation in awarding a spot kick which Armitage despatched confidently. In the final minute Josh Rodgers broke through to make it 5-0 but with the keeper to beat he attempted an audacious chip which went straight at the keeper.
