Weekend round-up: 27/28 April.
The First XI had no scheduled match which enabled manager Paul Eddleston to support the Second XI in their Ron Pope Cup Final against Sporting Club Beckenham at Holmesdale FC. Going in as confirmed underdogs, player/manager Jez Allen's team talk would have stressed the need to keep things tight for the first half hour, but conceding in the second minute did not help! Farnborough hit back almost immediately when a George Perry wide free kick found its way straight into the net. The rest of the half was dominated by Beckenham but not to the extent people had anticipated and leading scorer TJ Kode was always a threat up front, despite being very tightly marked.
Half-time came with the scores even but then Beckenham again scored early with a great strike from the edge of the box. They had evidently decided to up the tempo of their game and this told with two further goals to make the final score 4-1. Congratulations to them but also high praise for the Guild in defeat. Jez told us "I'm really proud of the whole team for the massive effort they put in on Saturday. Despite going down 1-0 early in the game we fought back to 1-1 at half-time. SCB definitely knew they were in a game. They scored a screamer to make it 2-1 and then we ran out of steam towards the end of game conceding a couple of scrappy goals. The support on the day from everyone was amazing."
According to player/manager Ben Tomkins the Saturday Vets put in their best performance of the season in beating fellow title contenders Bromley FC Supervets 4-0 at home in the league with a Tucks James hat-trick and a Bobby Moulson strike. It's an exciting table with four teams chasing first place with just a few games to go.
Heavy overnight rain left us with just one match on Sunday, when Maidstone United Under 13s visited Farrow Fields with the win in sight that would give them the league title. It all seemed to be going their way until half-time when they held a 3-1 lead, but a great fightback from FOBG inspired by a terrific team spirit and Harry Lauder's finishing ability saw the home side win 5-3 thus sending the trophy to Ebbsfleet United. Harry scored four in the match (Callum Clifford got the other) and with a tally of 51 league and cup goals is, at the time of writing, the Kent Youth League's leading scorer at all age groups from Under 13 to Under 18, i.e. the entire league!
The Under 13s end the season in fourth place in the table, a remarkable achievement considering the company they are keeping and that it's their first campaign at KYL level. Add in the fact that they lost their first three league games of the season, starting with a 1-0 defeat to eventual champions Ebbsfleet and had two decent cup runs, managers Michael Clarke and Seb Favata can be very proud.
